“Gospel is not a genre of music I listen to on a regular basis but recently received a CD from Lisa Reedy Promotions and Holy Mountain Music and decided to give it a listen.

Songs From Sunday Morning Vol. 1 is the first release from Holy Mountain Music, a production and publishing group founded by arranger/producer Bobby Bush.  Their first offering contains new versions of gospel standards and classics. 

The music is jazzy and funky, but not overly so. What you do hear is a groove that is undeniable and one that provides a positive message.  Guitarist Rick Bowlby is a highlight throughout the album.  I’m not sure if he does work outside of Christian music but I wouldn’t mind hearing a full album of his guitar work.

As for the material, the titles are familiar but you haven’t heard them like this: “Swing Low, Sweet Chariot”, “Nothing But The Blood”, “What A Friend We Have In Jesus”, and “Crown Him With Many Crowns”. There is a spoken intro at the beginning of the featured track (Tis’ So Sweet) and immediately you feel like you’re entering church awaiting the good word from the pastor. 

When it comes, you feel comforted and want to listen to it all. Despite the Christian themes of all of the songs, one does not have to be a Christian to enjoy the music.  There is nothing wrong with wanting and seeking good in yourself and life, and the way they perform on this CD is definitely uplifting.  

You can look to jazz or go into the church and see real musicians playing the music that satisfies them, but it is interesting when the gospel and jazz worlds collide.  Songs From Sunday Morning Vol. 1 will be re-released in June of 2008.  If you are a fan of good gospel music, you will find it here!”

The CD features solo performances by a number of distinguished artists including trumpeter Fletch Wiley, saxophonist Jaared and vocalist Carmen Calhoun. Most of the tracks are instrumental, with styles ranging from upbeat to contemplative to majestic in nature. They present performances of orchestral and electric instruments, in contrast to the heavy reliance on synthesizers so commonly found in recorded music today.

“I developed each arrangement with the intention of allowing the artistry of the musicians and their inspirational playing to generate the excitement and renewal of the song,” said Bush, the arranger and producer of the album. The arrangements of the songs present a variety of jazz interpretations built on the strength of each melody and the emotional content of familiar lyrics and refrains. “My hope is that the underlying joy in the music will reinforce the joy in its message.”
